"International Geneva Peacebuilding Guide" – 13.09.07

In early 2006 the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), with the financial support of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, launched a project entitled “The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission and International Geneva”. In July 2007, the Geneva International Academic Network (GIAN) accepted to finance one component of this project within its "Small Grants" programme.

The overall objective of the project is to assess the implications of the new United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for International Geneva. In particular, it seeks to explore how best Geneva-based stakeholders can add value to the work of the PBC, in terms of country-specific operations, norms and standards setting, lessons-learned reviews and conceptualisation of peacebuilding operations.

On 12 September 2007, the GCSP and its partners -- the Quaker United Nations Office (QUNO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Programme for Strategic and International Security Studies (PSIS) of the Graduate Institute of International Studies (GIIS) -- organised a public launch of the first phase of the project's findings. The resulting document, the "International Geneva Peacebuilding Guide", presents the conclusions of a mapping exercise that focused on peacebuilding capacity and expertise available in Geneva.

The GIAN-supported "Small Grant" assists with conference costs and the publication of a report that will analyse the mapping exercises' findings and present recommendations to enhance the contribution of Geneva-based institutions in the area of peacebuilding.

The "International Geneva Peacebuilding Guide" is the result of a high-quality online survey that has been completed by over 60 Geneva-based organisations. Users may search for Geneva-based organisations engaged in peacebuilding, peacebuilding sectors, regions and countries, as well as types of activities in which the organisations are active.
