We are having trouble adapting the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU ) to our specific standards. What should we do?

Please contact the GIAN Secretariat. The example of MoU has been prepared to assist beneficiaries of GIAN funding and is a suggested approach that may be modified if necessary. A special MoU is also available specifically for use with international organisations. Generally, the MoU may be adapted on an ad hoc basis before signature, upon consultation with the GIAN.

Does the GIAN sign the MoU?
In principle, the GIAN is not a signatory of the MoU. The MoU is an understanding outlining the modalities of the collaboration between project partners. The GIAN plays the role of facilitator and funding entity but is not an executor of the project. However, in some cases the GIAN may sign the MoU, for instance if the project structure requires several concurrent agreements. This decision is taken on an ad hoc basis.

What is an intermediary report?
The intermediate report is a document that is expected at approximately the midpoint of the project. Its acceptance represents a necessary condition for the disbursal of the second allotment of funds. The report consists of two documents: the narrative report and the budgetary report. Please refer to the Guidelines for Intermediate and Final Reports for details.

What is a final report?
The final report is a 15- to 20-page document composed of four parts: 1) an "Executive Summary"; 2) a summary of the "Executive Summary"; 3) an internal report; and 4) the budgetary report. It represents the completion of the project and should be ready for publication in print form and on the GIAN website. Please refer to the Guidelines for Intermediate and Final Reports for details.

What is a budgetary report?
The budgetary report is essentially a balance sheet accompanying project reports, that is based on the budget originally approved by the GIAN, that documents project expenses at the respective times of the intermediate and final reports. It is subject to other rules that can be found in the Guidelines for Intermediate and Final Reports.

Who reviews the intermediate and final reports, and their respective budgets?
The Scientific Committee is responsible for the evaluation of these documents and recommends individual action based on their evaluation. The Secretariat also reviews budgetary reports.

Can a successful GIAN project be extended after it has been completed, or can a project be submitted to the GIAN under the expectation of receiving future funding as a extension of the current project?
The GIAN specifically does not fund "part 2" projects submitted by the same team in the Call for project proposals for projects that were successful 24 months before. There are no provisions for extending projects in this manner either. Project teams are encouraged to search for other sources of funding if they intend to extend the research after 24 months.
