Over the last four years, WFUNA has organised a series of Seminars aimed at demystifying the Human Rights Commission. Since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, WFUNA has considered the defence and promotion of human rights as an intrinsic part of its mission. March 2006 witnessed the replacing of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights with a standing Human Rights Council, indicating a major step forward for the advancement and protection of human rights worldwide. WFUNA therefore decided to collaborate with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Graduate Institute of International Studies and the Geneva International Academic Network, to devote its 2006 Seminar to the new Human Rights Council.

The main objective of the Seminar project is to introduce the Human Rights Council, highlighting the changes brought to the human rights system by the creation of this new body, whilst stressing the continuity of its work with that of the Commission on Human Rights. The Seminar will be held over three days with expert lectures and presentations as well as panel discussions. WFUNA will work directly with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to design a programme for the Seminar covering every aspect of the Council. The third day will be devoted to practical concerns of how different actors should best use the Council. The Speakers will be UN Human rights experts, particularly from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as representatives of governmental and Non-governmental organisations, and members of the academic world.

A comprehensive report of the Seminar containing a record of presentations and discussions will be produced, in both English and French, subsequent to the Seminar. The report will be sent out to all...
