OMCT conférence: Comment agir contre les causes économiques, sociales et culturelles de la torture - 7 décembre 2006, 13h, Palais des Nations

Ce texte n'existe qu'en anglais.

In a Human Rights Council side event, the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) will present its GIAN-supported publication "Attacking the Root Causes of Torture: Poverty, Inequality and Violence, An Interdisciplinary Study". A discussion with panel members and the public will follow.

The objective of the session will be to consider relevant approaches for action in response to the challenge launched by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Louise Arbour, in her preface to the study. In particular, the panellists and research team ask what the Council, committees and special procedures can do in a concrete way to act against the root causes of torture and other forms of violence.

The OMCT study is included within the programme of the Geneva International Academic Network (RUIG-GIAN). It was made possible through the financial support of the GIAN, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Dutch Foundation ICCO (Interchurch Organisation for Development Cooperation) and the Fondation des droits de l’homme au travail.

The panel debate takes place in room IX of the Palais des Nations on Thursday, 7 December from 1 pm to 3 pm. Please contact Mr. Tom McCarthy from OMCT ( tmc@omct.org ; tel. 022 367 1942) for additional information.
